What is First Aid?

🩹 What Is First Aid?

First Aid is the immediate care provided to someone who is injured or suddenly becomes ill before professional medical help arrives. Quick action can help prevent a condition from worsening, reduce recovery time, and in some cases, save a life.

Our First Aid training teaches participants how to recognize emergencies, assess a situation safely, and provide appropriate care while waiting for Emergency Medical Services (EMS).

🚑 Topics May Include:

  • 🩹 Cuts, scrapes, and bleeding control
  • 🔥 Burns and electrical injuries
  • 🤕 Head, neck, and spinal injuries
  • 🦴 Sprains, strains, and fractures
  • 😷 Allergic reactions and anaphylaxis
  • ☀️ Heat exhaustion and heat stroke
  • ❄️ Cold-related emergencies
  • 🩸 Diabetic emergencies
  • ⚡ Seizures and medical emergencies
  • 🐝 Insect bites and stings
  • ☠️ Poisoning awareness
  • 🚨 Emergency scene assessment and EMS activation

In an emergency, the first few minutes are often the most important. First Aid training provides the knowledge and confidence to respond calmly, make informed decisions, and assist an injured or ill person until professional medical help arrives.

Whether at home, work, school, or in the community, First Aid skills help create safer environments and empower individuals to take action when it matters most.

🩹 Why First Aid & CPR Training Matters

Emergencies don't come with a warning. Whether it's a severe allergic reaction, choking incident, fall, burn, or sudden cardiac arrest, knowing how to respond in those critical first moments can make all the difference.

First Aid, CPR, and AED training provide the knowledge, skills, and confidence needed to recognize emergencies, take appropriate action, and assist a person until professional medical help arrives.

APD Approved CPR training

APD-approved CPR training refers to CPR certification that meets the requirements of Florida’s Agency for Persons with Disabilities (APD) for providers serving individuals with developmental disabilities. This training must include hands-on skills practice with an in-person skills check and cover adult CPR, AED use, and choking relief (child and infant CPR may be required depending on the setting).  APD accepts CPR courses from recognized organizations such as the American Heart Association (AHA). Online Only CPR courses are not APD compliant. CPR certification must be kept current, typically renewed every two years, and providers must maintain a valid certificate for compliance and audits.

What does “APD-approved CPR training” mean?

It means the CPR class:

  • Is accepted by Florida APD for compliance

  • Meets provider and direct care staff training requirements

  • Is appropriate for group homes, adult day training programs, and supported living settings

APD Approved Continued Education Units Assistance (CEU)

CEUs are often required for professionals to maintain their licenses or certifications. They are commonly used in fields like education, healthcare, engineering, and finance.

We also specialize in CEU assistance for CNA/HHA in Espanol and Creole!

The number of Continuing Education Units (CEUs) required for Certified Nursing Assistants (CNAs) and Home Health Aides (HHAs) varies by state and regulatory body, but here’s a general overview:

For CNAs:

  • Typically, 12 to 24 hours of continuing education per year are required, depending on the state.
  • Many states require CNAs to complete these CEUs as a condition for license renewal every two years. This means a total of 24 to 48 hours over a two-year period.
  • Topics may include infection control, patient rights, and updates on patient care skills.

For HHAs:

  • Usually around 12 hours per year of continuing education is required for HHAs in many states.
  • Federal requirements mandate that HHAs complete at least 12 hours of in-service training annually, especially if they are employed by agencies receiving Medicare and Medicaid funding.
  • Topics for HHAs often focus on home care skills, patient safety, and mental health.
